What does Class A fire rating mean?
Class A (A1/A2) is the highest European reaction-to-fire classification, indicating the board contributes virtually nothing to a fire's growth.

Can fire rated boards still look attractive?
Absolutely. They carry decorative fire-safe finishes, so you meet regulations without a clinical, utilitarian look.
Where are they typically required?
Escape routes, public assembly spaces, healthcare and anywhere fire performance must be documented. In a building over 18 metres, Building Regulation 7(2) restricts what can go on external walls and specified attachments, so check the classification report with your building control body first.
Fire rated, fire resistant or fireproof: what is the difference?
They are often used to mean two different tests. Reaction to fire, the Euroclass from A1 to F, says how much a material feeds a fire and spreads flame across its surface; these panels are Class A, the top of that scale. Fire resistance, quoted in minutes such as 30, 60 or 120, belongs to a complete wall build tested as one, with its frame, boards, fixings and joints, not to a board on its own. Can fire rated panels be used in homes?
Yes. They are used in residential and commercial buildings alike: flats, HMOs and the escape routes of blocks of flats as much as offices, hotels and public buildings. The certification is the same wherever the fire rated panels go.
