# Wall panel and smart home terms, explained

The words on our pages, each in a sentence or two.

**A1 fire rating**

The top reaction-to-fire class under the European standard EN 13501-1. An A1 material is non-combustible and makes no contribution to a fire, which is why it suits hotels, restaurants and other places with fire-safety rules.

**Bedside Smart Columns**

Factory-built modules that stand either side of a bed, with reading light, charging, sockets and optional sound built in. Sold as a pair in our Caledonian range. [More on Bedside Smart Columns](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/smart-walls/bedroom)

** Carbon Rock Board**

A mineral wall board, 1220 × 2400mm, that is A1 fire rated, acoustic and wipe-clean, in 57 finishes. It is the panel on every wall we build, and it is also sold by the board. [More on Carbon Rock Board](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/wall-panels/carbon-rock-board)

** Ex VAT and inc VAT**

Ex VAT prices exclude UK VAT; inc VAT prices include it at 20%. Our pages show ex VAT first, as trade customers compare them, with the VAT-inclusive figure alongside or in the basket. [More on prices](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/prices)

** Feature wall**

A decorative panel behind a TV, CNC-cut to take the bracket and finished with a matching trim. Ours come as one, two or three panels, supplied for you or your joiner to fit. [More on Feature wall](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/feature-walls)

** Fluted panel**

A wall panel with vertical grooves along its face, which catch light and shadow and give a wall rhythm without extra depth. [More on Fluted panel](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/wall-panels/fluted)

** Linear electric fire**

A wide electric fire set into the wall with a letterbox flame effect. It needs no flue and no gas, which is why it sits so easily under a TV in a media wall. [More on Linear electric fire](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/media-walls/fireplace)

** Matter**

An open smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung, so devices from different brands work with the same apps and voice assistants. [More on Matter](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/smart-devices)

** Media wall**

A built-in wall around a television, usually with an electric fire below it, lit display shelving either side and every cable hidden inside. Ours are modules built in our factory and fitted in two to four hours. [More on Media wall](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/media-walls)

** MixPad**

Orvibo's range of smart control panels: a touchscreen on the wall that runs lighting, scenes, curtains, climate and security from one place, alongside the app and voice control. [More on MixPad](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/smart-devices/orvibo/control-panels)

** Scene**

One saved setting for several devices at once. A movie scene might dim the lights, close the curtains and turn on the soundbar with a single press.

**Single module**

One smart wall column, 400, 600 or 800mm wide, for a kitchen, bathroom, office or alcove. Sold as the Harris Range. [More on Single module](https://www.thewallshop.co.uk/smart-walls/single-module)
