# Living room wall panelling ideas: 12 looks that work

Twelve living room wall panelling ideas, from marble TV walls and slatted panels to wooden and fabric effect boards, with what each costs and how to fit it.

Wall panelling is the quickest way to give a living room a finished look, and it has moved a long way from painted MDF strips. Here are twelve living room wall panelling ideas we see work in real rooms, with what each one costs and how it goes up.

We sell wall panels, so read this knowing that. Where a price is ours, it is Carbon Rock Board at £232 a 1220 × 2400mm board ex VAT, the same for every finish.

## 1. A marble TV wall

The idea people ask for most. One marble finish across the whole TV wall, with the joints planned around the centre line of the screen so they look deliberate. Behind a TV, choose a satin or matt face: a high-gloss panel reflects the screen and every lamp in the room.

Three full boards cover a wall 3.66 metres wide and 2.4 metres high, which is most living room TV walls.

## 2. Panel one wall, not the room

You can panel one wall in a living room, and it usually looks better than panelling all four. Choose the wall the room already faces: the TV, the fireplace or the wall behind the sofa. It becomes the focal point, and you spend on one wall rather than four.

Our feature walls are exactly this: one, two or three panels behind the TV, cut to your bracket and trimmed, from £480 ex VAT supply only.

## 3. Slatted wall panels either side of the TV

Slatted and fluted wall panels add vertical rhythm and shadow. Used as two columns either side of a TV, they frame the screen without competing with it. Timber slats on acoustic felt also soak up a little echo in a room with a hard floor.

Fluted boards give the same look in one piece, with no slats to align, and on a waterproof core they will not swell in a steamy open-plan kitchen-living room.

## 4. Wooden wall panels for warmth

Wooden wall panels make a living room feel warmer than any other finish. Real timber moves, fades and needs oiling; wood effect panels give the oak, ash or walnut grain on a stable core with nothing to maintain.

Pair a mid-tone oak panel with a pale floor, or a dark walnut wall with cream furniture. Avoid matching the panel exactly to the floor: two identical woods side by side look like a mistake.

## 5. Half-height panelling behind the sofa

Panelling the lower metre or so of a wall, with paint or wallpaper above, is a traditional look that still works. It protects the wall where the sofa rubs and gives the room a horizontal line to anchor the furniture. Finish the top edge with a trim so the cut core never shows.

## 6. Stone or micro-cement for a quiet room

If the TV is the wall's main job, choose a low-contrast stone or concrete finish. With the TV in art mode, the screen reads as a framed picture against a plain surface, which a busy marble cannot do.

## 7. A chimney breast in a single finish

Clad the chimney breast and leave the alcoves plain, or the other way round. With an electric fire set into the breast, the panel needs a real fire rating: Carbon Rock Board is A1, non-combustible, which is why we use it around fires on our media walls.

## 8. Fabric effect for a snug

Fabric walls feel soft and quiet but trap dust and mark easily. Fabric effect panels give the woven look of linen or a stone weave on a hard, wipe-clean board, which suits a snug, a reading corner or a family room with small children.

## 9. Metal or mirror accents

A little goes a long way. A brushed metal strip framing a fire, or mirror boards in two alcoves, bounce light round a north-facing room. A whole wall of mirror is a lot to live with; two narrow panels are usually enough.

## 10. Wall cladding in an open-plan living room

Wall cladding in a living room is the same idea on a larger scale: a whole wall, sometimes two, in one finish, often where the living area meets a kitchen. Waterproof panels earn their place here, because the same board can run past the hob and the sink without a change of material.

## 11. Lit panels and a built-in TV wall

Backlit trims, lit niches and a recessed TV turn a panelled wall into a media wall. Plan this before you fit anything, because the cables, sockets and LED drivers need somewhere to go. If you want the whole thing built for you, that is what our media walls are.

## 12. Carry it into the bedroom

The same ideas work as bedroom wall panels. A fluted or fabric effect wall behind the bed acts as a headboard, and a wood grain wall warms a bedroom the way it does a living room. Keep the bedroom softer and more matt than the living room: it is a room you look at in low light.

## How to fix wall panels in a living room

On a flat, sound wall, panels are bonded with panel adhesive, with any fixings hidden behind the trims. On an uneven wall, fix battens or an aluminium frame first and fix the panels to that; it also gives you a void for TV and speaker cables. Start from the centre line of the TV or fireplace rather than a corner, so the joints are symmetrical, and finish every edge with a matching trim.

Work out the number of boards by dividing the wall area by the area of one board, 2.93m² for a 1220 × 2400mm board, and rounding up. If you would rather not fit them yourself, we fit Carbon Rock Board in Glasgow and the Central Belt at £49 per m² ex VAT.

## Can you use bathroom wall panels in a living room?

Yes. A waterproof panel is not a lesser panel, and SPC and mineral boards are made for both rooms. The one to avoid on a living room feature wall is thin PVC bathroom cladding: it follows every bump in the wall behind it, and light raking across it from a downlight shows the ripples.

## Common questions

**Can you panel one wall in a living room?**

Yes, and it is usually the best way. Panel the wall the room already looks at, the one with the TV, the fire or the sofa against it, and leave the other three walls plain.

**How do you fix wall panels in a living room?**

Bond them with panel adhesive on a flat, sound wall. On an uneven wall, fix battens or an aluminium frame first and fix the panels to that. Start from the centre line of the TV or fireplace so the joints sit symmetrically, and trim every exposed edge.

**Can I use bathroom wall panels in a living room?**

Yes, a waterproof panel works anywhere. Avoid thin PVC bathroom cladding on a feature wall, though: it follows every bump in the wall and looks cheap under a downlight. A rigid SPC or mineral board looks right in both rooms.

**Are slatted wall panels the same as fluted panels?**

They give the same vertical rhythm. Slatted panels are separate timber or veneer slats, often on an acoustic felt backing; fluted panels are one board with grooves machined or moulded into it. A fluted board is quicker to fit and, on a waterproof core, will not swell.

**Do wall panels make a living room look smaller?**

Not if the finish is right. Vertical fluting draws the eye up and makes a low ceiling feel taller, and a pale finish keeps a small room bright. Very dark, glossy panels on every wall are what close a room in.
